The Production Of Silk Wool
Among the most interesting natural fibers found in nature is silk. The history of silk goes back more than 3000 years to the Chinese, who used this special fiber. The demand for silk goods and garments has remained strong season to season and year to year. China continues to be the largest producer of silk and exports it all over the world. This silk is identified by the term "China Silk" on all goods made from it.
And so how is silk created? Lets consider the process. The silk worms original habitat is in the mulberry tree. They are grown in large numbers for the silk worm breeding program.
When the eggs from the silk worm emerge, they are then fed mulberry leaves. The young caterpillars grow rapidly, in barely thirty five days they happen to be ten thousand times heavier in comparison with when first hatched. Right now they begin to spin a silk cocoon.
The silk manufacture begins with the worm, it is produced by glands in the silkworm's head. The silk is then spun out in fluid shape through openings called spinneret. When this liquid touches the air, it becomes solid and forms silk. These little worms can each spin almost a mile of silk and they engulf themselves in a cocoon over a couple of days.
At this juncture the worm would transition to a moth. Nevertheless before that takes place they are usually killed. The reason for killing them at this stage is because while they are in a position to exit the cocoon they secrete a liquid which dissolves the silk so they can exit the cocoon. This ruins the silk. Certainly not all of these are killed, a section are reserved for breeding.
After the cocoon are harvested, the undamaged cocoons are brushed to find the end of the silk filament. These are now put on a reel. Up to one thousand yards of silk are contained in each cocoon. This is called raw silk. A silk yarn can be made from combining several filaments. Taking this yarn and combining it with wool creates silk wool, it is essentially the most beautiful products used in the making of apparels or goods, beautiful silk wool fabric.
